Existing maps in the continent are either difficult to obtain, only available online, are too coarse for land-use management and are not accurate at the local scale.

Essentially, and if we keep making great progress, most of Africa and especially in arid regions where there are large subsistance farms but little soil information. 

This project is the first large scale mapping project for subsistance farmers. It is geared more towards their needs than for environmentalists.
